Opposites Attract
Isn’t it funny what works for some people? I mean, do you ever sit back and ponder how different we all are? I do…a lot. I am a stay-at-home mother who works from home, but I have not always worked from home. I have done a bit of everything it seems, but mostly in restaurants, classrooms, and small spaces. Interestingly, my husband has been a grad student since we married {hence I work from home}, and 3 degrees later, we’re wrapping things up. The funny thing is that we experience the same circumstances, and yet respond so differently. For example, when we finally got some great weather {we live in Scotland}, I was shocked how we responded with our work. I didn’t want to work…at all. I just wanted to be outside, with the kids. If they were napping or at school, I still wanted to be outside. Interestingly, my husband felt the exact opposite! The sunshine and warmth motivated him to buckle down and work on finishing his PhD! I would have thought a rainy, dreary day would be the best motivation- if you have to be inside after all, why not be productive, too?
Get Down to Business
Thus, I found that what kicks me into a mode of total lack of productivity is the very same thing that spurs my husband on towards his own deadlines. He felt invigorated, excited, motivated, revved up by the sun. Many people do. Instead, I feel like I’m wasting time. I’d rather not know I was missing the glorious sun. I guess it’s another reason why I don’t typically choose nature sounds for my sound machine. I just want a gentle hum that helps me tune out what’s going on around me. Someone like my husband would thrive with rolling waves or ocean surf, I suppose.
All that to say- know yourself and what works for you, and then implement it. Whether you need to tune out the world around you or channel the best it has to offer to get work done, do it and don’t overthink it. {And, if you’re my husband, finish your PhD immediately, if not sooner!}
