White Noise for Sleep

Feeling a Little Unenthusiastic about Nature?

Are you haunted by birds outside your window?  Do they taunt you to the point you feel you may have to take drastic measures just to survive without going completely insane?

To the crows ka-ka-ing outside my bedroom window at 5:30am. Unless you take your morning meeting elsewhere, I may have a bb gun in my future. You’ve been warned.

This reminds me a little too much of Failure to Launch.  Not a great film, but worth a viewing just because of the sideshow bob characters, one of whom {Zooey Deschanel} is been driven mad by a chirping mocking bird.  The poor girl just can’t get any sleep as a result of this bird’s incessant talking.  Her plan of action was not any nobler than my friend’s up above.

White Noise Mimics Nature and Therefore Trumps It

When I hear of these complaints, I just can’t help but think, why?  There are many, many noises that you can’t do much about, such as the sound of your newborn crying inconsolably or a train passing you at 4am.  However, most of nature and its, um, noisiness, can be dealt with in much more humanitarian ways.  At the risk of sounding like a broken record, how about a little white noise?  Ironically, white noise usually mimics nature sounds, which may seem counter-intuitive when trying to cover nature sounds.  However, real nature is sporadic and unpredictable, and while breathtakingly peaceful outdoors on a hike, it is incredibly disturbing while trying to sleep.  In contrast, white noise simulates nature sounds- it’s less authentic, I suppose, but the benefit is a uniform, consistent sound.  This kind of uniformity enables you to sleep and stay asleep because your brain focuses on it instead of errant noises.  Plus, as long as you don’t choose chirping birds, there shouldn’t be any startling tweets that bring you out of slumber.

If nature outside your bedroom window is getting a little too realistic, try a sound machine so you can tune it out and get a good night’s sleep.

Tips for Getting a Valentine’s Date {even if you have small children!}

From Dreaming about Prince Charming to Dating Him {after you’re married with kids!}

The typical little girl grows up dreaming about meeting Prince Charming, getting married, and having beautiful babies.   She dresses up as a bride and marries Ken in a sweet little ceremony performed by her doll, all the while picturing a gorgeous, frilly, poofy, lovely white dress and oodles of roses for everyone.  That’s what usually happens, so I hear, it’s not like I actually did this…{ahem}….

In real life, some of this may actually come true.  She may meet the man of her dreams and be whisked away into a perfect life of sheer bliss.  And she may even have beautiful babies, but newborns and babies and toddlers aren’t always as predictable as we wish they were.  And they definitely don’t allow for the spur-of-the-moment romance we used to enjoy.  There’s no spontaneous “Let’s go to the beach this weekend” because even if it were possible to find a babysitter, you’re exhausted just thinking about packing up the pack n play, 17 pacis, 100 diapers, not mention however many outfits little one is bound to need.  So, we all know what usually happens…no vacation, no romantic get-away, no Valentine’s day because Lord knows, there is no one left to babysit on the most “romantic” night of the year.

But you know what?  Your spouse is worth more than blowing it all off!  You used to be able to create special moments, now it just takes a little more planning and thougthfulness that’s all.

Tips for Getting a Valentine’s Date

Here are some ideas for dating your spouse even when you have small children at home.

  1. Ask grandma to babysit.  Usually Granny doesn’t have a hot date or is willing to be flexible in when she celebrates V-day.  So, ask her in advance, and go out!
  2. If grandparents aren’t in town, ask a friend or someone you trust to sit.  Make sure you ask early enough that they’re not already busy and be willing to pay.  dating your spouse is worth it.
  3. Go out another night.  Who cares if you celebrate another day?  Just make sure you go out!
  4. If you can’t find a babysitter, have a special date at home after the kids go down for the night.  Decorate your living room or kitchen in a tropical theme regardless of the weather outside.  Turn up the heat by wearing a fun, flirty outfit your spouse can’t help but notice, and add to the ambiance with nature sounds.  Buy or cook a meal that you would enjoy if you actually were on an island.  This is sure to lift moods and is a great investment in your relationship even if you barely spend anything!  {tip: if you don’t have a sound machine, try the nature sounds on this free generator!}

No matter how you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, make sure you invest in your relationship.  You can even create great ambiance for an at home island date with this free online generator!

White Noise for Creative Play

Creative Play

Tea Party

I have 2 young children (ages 2 and 4) and one of my favorite things has been watching their imaginations develop, especially in their creative play.  I am one of those moms who believes in independent play and play that requires thinking.  All I mean by that is that you don’t need to buy a set of toys to replicate a scene, such as the grocery store or a tea party.  It’s great fun to have those toys, but how much better is it when your child takes some other container and dubs it a tea cup and saucer?  Regardless of where you get the toys or how many you have, or even of how much you spent, your children have all the resources they need in their little heads!

Our 4 year old daughter has had an active imagination for quite some time, and we are starting to see our toddler’s develop, too!  I copied her preschool program by setting up a play area with a specific theme: tea party!  While I pulled out a card table and the basics, I really enjoyed watching the kids add the details, such as sugar, milk, and biscuits.   Our toddler was an eager party attender, as well, and LOVED pretending to pour milk and dump sugar in his “tea” cup.

How to set up play themes

Grocery Store

There aren’t a lot of rules per se, but here is what I would recommmend:

  • Think of a theme {see below for ideas}
  • Look around the house for items you can use {very frugal, I know!}
  • Have the child help you set up and think of ideas
  • You set the boundaries, such as in their room or for a set amount of time
  • Play with the children and allow them to play alone
  • Ask the kids for new ideas or ways to enhance the current one.

Possible Themes

While I do have some of the following props, we often use something else in its place- by helping your child be imaginative in their play, you are fostering creativity and frugality in their little hearts and minds!  It has never occurred to our children that we don’t have exactly what we need to make an idea come to life!  In fact, most of their jerry-rigged contraptions are better than a life-like toy, like today when they pretended their room was a park and used a nature sounds white noise generator to make it rain!

  • Tea Party- table, chairs {edge of bed!}, tea set, pretend food
  • Kitchen- a play kitchen, or just the top of a dresser, pretend food, a grocery cart, a cash register
  • Nursery- dolls, baby accessories, crib/bed, high chair, stroller, diaper bag
  • School/ class room- teacher desk, student desk, paper, colors {if you dare!}, chalkboard/dry erase board
  • Pet Store- stuffed animals, price tags, cash register {teaches them about money, too!}, play money
  • Restaurant- table and chairs, pretend food, plates, plastic ware, menu, bill,cash register, play money {You could even fold a dish towel and tuck the edge in your child’s waist band for a waiter “look”}

*If you do want to buy some things, check out Craig’s List, FreeCycle, eBay, charity shops, Good Will, and consignment shops before you run out to Target- you’ll be amazed at how many things you can find cheap!

My Steps toward Green & Organic Living

Green & Organic Living

Going green and living organically is all the rage these days.  Even my home state of Texas is starting to recycle…baby steps, friends, baby steps.  In all honesty, I have fought these things.  I never really bought into the why’s behind the change, I just fought the change and the expense that came hand-in-hand.  It wasn’t until moving to Iowa and then overseas {and also having children whom I want the very best for} that I began to see the benefits of living greener and more organically.  I’m not fully evolved, mind you, but I have become convinced that being a better steward of nature and ultimately what I believe God has given us is critical to our own and our children’s health and well-being.  We recycle everything we can and have even been known to compost {mostly due to limited trash pick-ups, but I’ll still take credit for it.}

Coping when things are not the way they’re supposed to be

Some types of noise actually bring peace.

That said, we still have to live in an imperfect world.  There are still a lot of things left to be desired, one of which is peace and quiet.  Living has gotten quite loud and distracting, and many find it it hard to concentrate or sleep even when exhausted.  It’s practically impossible to shut out the worries of the world and the anxiety they bring.  As a result, I have found that part of my desire to connect more with nature is using nature sounds for relaxation and even for better sleep.  I tried ear plugs to tune out  noisy neighbors, but they felt oddly unauthentic {and actually made my ears sore, too- double whammy}.  In contrast, listening to waves crash or birds chirping merrily or even the constant, peaceful sound of a waterfall, while generated, felt more natural, more organic.  Plus, with generated white noise, you get all the advantages of real nature without buying oceanfront property and none of the downsides, such as hurricanes or tarantulas.

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need sleep aides, but things are not the way they’re supposed to be, are they?
