New Baby…No Sleep!
As excited as most of us are to welcome our new little bundles of joy in to the world, it’s not always so easy to feel that same sense of hospitality in our homes. Infants are notorious for keeping strange hours and their night time sleep is usually in very small chunks. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, they hit about 4 months and noises start to disturb them…the neighbor’s dog that barks at all hours and every squirrel that darts by, cars on the street that have the audacity to be out past 7pm, and a thunder that pretends it’s not scary to a baby.
Tips for How to Use Sound Machines with Baby
As a result of these sleep-intrusive problems, I am going to offer some tips from my personal experience to help get you through one of the sleepiest times of your life. {For a few more tips, go here!}
First, let’s start with baby. Granted they sleep through a lot of noises early on, but for those times when they don’t, I love a good sound machine. I found that the white noise was soothing to my babies and helped establish a consistent, calming environment for them that signalled it was time for sleep. My kids are almost 3 and 5 now, and while they can sleep without sound machines, they love them! And so do I because in our small flat I don’t have to worry about after-hour events we might host or phone calls that might come in at nap time. Plus, that white noise still serves as a sign post for sleepy time.- Now, let’s talk about you, as a parent, using a sound machine. This can be quite controversial since many parents feel the need to constantly monitor baby. Since baby’s safety and health are of utmost importance, I tend to agree that knowing that they’re okay is essential. So, if night time noises bother you and you need to be able to hear baby, I suggest that you use your sound machine and a baby monitor. Keep both machines on your bed side table and you will be able to tune out sleep-disturbing noises (cars, barking dogs, storms, spouse that’s still awake, TV) and still keep track of baby’s needs. This is especially helpful in the middle of the night feeding period when you really are on call 24 hours a day.
I would like to add that if you are using a sound machine in baby’s room, too, remember that this will be a faint sound/light on your monitor, as well, since baby’s room monitor will pick up their own sound machine noise. Just keep this in mind and don’t panic if you see a single light flash on your monitor- it should remain steady and not increase in volume, but it will register the white noise.
Now you have two very practical tips for how to use a sound machine and white noise so you and baby can sleep through the night!
